BENEFIT

1970 marks a release of "Benefit" - one of the most important albums in Jethro Tull's catalog. "Why?" you might ask. Well, this is because of a crucial transition from blues rock based music to "braving the new world." The group found themselves a folk-inspired scenario. With a very English, Charles Dickens-esque element, even on pieces with strains of their original blues style, which obviously couldn't get rid of all at once. This creates a fascinating, fresh sound of a band finding its path. Furthermore, John Evan, a keyboard player guested on the album, introducing a strong classical music influence.

The highlights of the album are the moody "Teacher" and "With You There To Help Me." The last one in particular shows a strong folk music influence that would later be shaped into songs like "Cross-Eyed Mary". Martin Barre's bluesy guitar tone is still present and it definitely integrates well with the path taken by the band.

Albeit still not as exciting as the albums that are to in the following years, this album is a very important work and it is recommended to prog fans!
