A quaint little album between two outstanding albums, there really isn't a good way to describe this album in terms of genre, it's all over the place. Essentially, we have an album full of remixes, but to say they sound anything like their predecessor would be lying. This is all new stuff, as I really can find no way to compare this to the music found on La Masquerade Infernale.

From the start it should appear very clear that this album will be quite different from a traditional black metal output. We have minimalist sections, atmospheric keys, carnival escapades, gangster rap, avant-garde harp like pieces, techno fusion beats -- really, I could continue at this and I'm sure I'd be missing something. This is the most Ulver-sounding album, and that's probably why I enjoy it the most out of all of the Arcturus discography. The greatest thing about it, it's not quirky just to be quirky. It actually works. You can feel the ideas and the emotions coming out from the music. It's not just a hodge-podge of ideas thrown down on a page, theres a distinct ebb and flow that the musicians tried to achieve, and they did just that. My favorite piece is the rapping of Master of Disguise. Most likely its unlike any other rap you've heard or dreaded hearing. The fact that I hate rap but enjoy this piece is a testament to how good it really is.

In short, if you have an open mind about progressive and the boundaries of music, you should get this album. It certainly won't be for everyone. And I'm sure there will by many who despise it and do not understand what musical qualities are to be found here, but it is really a special and jewel of an album. And if you are patient enough, I'm sure you will come to love this album as I have.
