3 stars What's the point ?

Or rather; why did Iron Maiden release three live albums in a matter of 18 months ? The pension funds has been secured and let's hope the band did not put the money in Icelandic banks. At least; Live At Donington is a more coherent live album than the dreadful two other live albums from the same year. This is from one live performance only. Which is the whole point about live albums, although Made In Japan (the best live album ever released) was made up by songs from three live performances over a period of a few days. OK, I have just shot myself in the foot............ NURSE !!! NURSE !!!

Live At Donington runs through some good tracks from Iron Maiden's return to street metal. The long epic tracks, with the notable exception of Hallowed Be Thy Name, has all been omitted. This live album is therefore very, very different from the epic Live After Death. It shows another side of Iron Maiden. An angle I do not care much about. Anyway, the songs are OK, but the sound is flat and compressed. A big plus for showing up a live feeling (not made in the studio) but the sound is too flat for my liking. Even Live After Death have better sound.

As stated above, I do not care much about the street metal phase Iron Maiden was doing at the time of this live album. That is why I never listen to the albums from that era. But Live At Donington is an excellent documentation about this era. That is why it is a good live album.

3 stars.
