3 stars One of the last great albums

I am an unashamed RENAISSANCE fan. The reason is a mix of the playful, symphonic music and the brilliant vocals by Annie Haslam. For me, that is an almost perfect unity.

I heard both good and bad things about this album before I purchased it. I waited some months before I finally commited some dollars to this album. It was with shaking hands I put the CD in the CD player... Thankfully, there are more good things on this album than bad things. Yes, the band was going for a big payday on this album and I guess they had one eye on their prospective bank balance. The references to ABBA is clearly there. I am not a fan of ABBA, btw. But songs like The day of the dreamer, Openning Out, Northern Lights and the title track is a good throwback to the old days of this band. The rest is pretty dubious and a farewell to the good old days. The references to ABBA on Closer than yesterday is vomit-inducing. The rest is OK.

This is said to be the last of the good RENAISSANCE albums. I can understand why they went for a good payday. At least they went out with a bang (the title track). I think the symphonic prog tracks here are great. The pop tracks are quite bad. Overall, not bad.

3 stars.
