4 stars My favourite Porcupine Tree album is not a Prog Album.

But its one of the best Albums of another genre that I hold very dear. And as such doesnīt get the credit it deserves. Itīs a masterpiece of Alternative Rock.

Of course it would (and shouldve been) a Cornerstone of that genre. With its slightly psychedelic floydy take on the genre. Thats really the only thing prog on this album. The sound. And maybe two songs namely the instrumental psychedelic workout tinto brass and the lengthy Donīt Hate Me. But Tinto Brass is in no place representative for the album and in that function only a short change of pace. In that sense it wouldnīt have been out of place on any Muse album even some songs of the Chili Peppers album One Hot Minute are proggier than this song. And after all it finishes in a pure hard rock riff and is simply a jam on a bass riff. Similar to Signify from the album with the same name. Yeah and thats about it. The reason people believe this is prog is: A its from Porcupine Tree (a Prog band). It has some very delicate and atmosphericly clean washes of arrangement that give it a tranquil texture most of you only expect on a prog album. This delightful almost acoustic (in the sense of real sound in opposite to digital) quality of a very electonic music is big part of some of the prog cliches I guess. And this factor together with the incrdible hook and melody writing of steven is the reason why I find this to be his absolute apex as a songwriter.

Not as prog musician. He would peak at that later with Fear of A Blank Planet. Combining the alternative elements with real prog writing and a well thought out concept. This album also has a concept. Another misleading quality.

Favourite Track: "Pure Narcotic" that bass is just exactly what love feels for me. The love of a child. Or a nurturing mom. Thx Mom.

I hope this doesnīt come as a rant. I love this album.

An excellent addition to any prog rock collection.
