You know, I actually won a copy of this album at a pre-release party. Yup I won it, but it wasn't much of a victory, it was more of a defeat, because after the black album, which, while not as interesting as Metallica's 80s releases, is still a very good and solid rock/metal album. It's no coincidence that it made Metallica a household name globally. And then comes "Load" - a collection of all grown up and boring sounding songs. On the black album, Metallica abandoned the complexity that otherwise characterized them, and on "Load" they simply abandoned the ballsy rock energy that's also been a characteristic, leaving us with an empty shell of hypocritical eyeliner-artiness and nothing whatsoever musically. There aren't many interesting songs here, "Mamma Said", an acourstic song with a second rate 90s band meets a 3rd rate country-western singer songwriter feel to it, being the absolute low point. The only song on this album that I like is "King Nothing"... ironically.
