After the launching of "The Piper at the gates of dawn" in 1967 and the forced departure of Syd Barrett and his replacement with David Gilmour, Pink Floyd took a more obscure and spacey path of music. This album sounds way much more experimental than its predecessor and clearly gives a base of what we later would call Space Rock. The band composed here very interesting pieces with longer instrumental passages; the guitar, drums, and especially keyboards and synthesizers were used to define what would be the classic dark space rock that Pink Floyd would amplify in later albums like "Atom heart mother" and "Meddle".

In 1968 Progressive Rock was emerging, even when many people consider King Crimson's debut album "In the court of the Crimson King" the first completely Progressive Rock album in history, in 1968 there were some bands already making Progressive Rock albums and "A saucerful of secrets" is one of those early Progressive Rock albums.

The songs here have lots of changes, from obscure moments to other glory shiny ones, the title song is the best example of what I'm saying, and it was especially well represented in the legendary Pompeii concert. The first two songs and the last two songs have more joyful sounds ("Jugband Blues" was recorded in 1967 with Syd Barrett still in the band), while the three in the middle are remarkably more obscure and mystic, giving to this album a characteristic multicolored spirit.

If you ask me, this is where Pink Floyd began to play Progressive Rock and to define its future classic style of music.
