4 stars Opeth - Still Life

I'm pretty sure anyone who's been in the death metal scene has heard about this band. Opeth became popular and highly praised (quite understandably) for their masterful blend between the brutality of death metal and the tender, soft and beautiful melodies of progressive rock. While their first three records proved to be solid works, it wasn't until 1999's Still Life when they truly were crowned by the death metal scene as masters.

Still Life is an album I love. Some of the tracks in this album are truly brilliant, like the opener 'The Moor' or the beautiful 'Face Of Melinda', and you can easily see that the band progressed a lot from previous offerings.

A good amount of the songs feel a little longer than they can afford to be, such is the case of 'Moonlapse Vertigo', a track that I personally find to be a little bit of a filler compared to the previous tracks, rehashing the heavy-soft-heavy song structure of Godhead's Lament, while 'White Cluster' feels like leftover riffs, verses and chorus put together. It doesn't flow well.

The album as a whole is quite hard to listen from beginning to end due to the problems I stated before. Regardless, there's no denial that the album is solid, enjoyable and throughly fun. Because of that reason, I'm giving it five stars. Definitely should check it out if you are a fanatic of death metal.
