5 stars Dream Theater - Awake

How do you follow up an album as important and essential as Images And Words, which redefined the sound of progressive metal for eternity? Dream Theater knew that making a record exactly like Images And Words would not be good, so they grabbed Images And Words and gave it a twist... They made it twice as heavy!

And not only is the record itself heavier, but the album in general has a much more serious, almost dark vibe. The black and white album cover definitely warned you! These points are pretty much the reason why there's many fans that prefer Awake over Images And Words.

Awake, as an album, has an excellent flow. There really isn't a single song that's there just to increase song length or fill-up space, every track feels essential to the album. All this while going from soft and tender (The Silent Man, Lifting Shadows Off A Dream, Space Dye Vest) to heavy, hard hitting tracks (Voices, The Mirror, Lie, Scarred). This track list truly proves that Dream Theater is a highly versatile band (or at least the Dream Theater that made this album).

One of the best, and most unique, Dream Theater albums. Highly recommended. Five stars in my humble opinion.
