Not every Progressive Rock band started playing Progressive Rock. GENESIS' debut album was released in 1969 and the music it contains resembles a lot to bands of the moment that were flirting with Progressive Rock without going completely into the genre such as PROCOL HARUM or THE MOODY BLUES. This album is filled with very short songs with a very premature style that would be later developed in the following albums of the band.

The first line-up of GENESIS already featured Tony BANKS, Mike RUTHERFORD, Peter GABRIEL, and Anthony PHILLIPS (this last one would only remain for one more album before he left the group), so the classic line-up of GENESIS was almost complete, only after the inclusion of Phil COLLINS and Steve HACKETT in 1971 the band finally become into what I like to call the classic line-up. "From Genesis to Revelation", as I said before, is not a Progressive Rock record per se, but it is a historical and very important episode in the development of GENESIS.

Maybe they were trying to get into the Pop culture of music and they had no idea of the potential and all the magnificent records they were about to create in the next few years but this is certainly not a total waste. The songs in the album never got further than this and honestly, they are easy to forget, so it is necessary to re-discover the album once in a while to remember what was it about.

Being a big fan of the material GENESIS recorded and launched in the first half of the 1970s it is hard to assimilate this album was made by the same band, but it is important to understand this was a debut album and probably they didn't even know what they wanted to play, so for general culture or just curious of how GENESIS' career started, it could be a very nice discovery, and of course, if you enjoy the sixties' symphonic Proto-Progressive Rock bands you're going to love this record.
