3 stars Frank Zappa - The Grand Wazoo

As with most Frank Zappa records, you really shouldn't check the album if you're seeking a more team-based work where every member of the band shines in its own way. Here, Frank Zappa is really the only one who shines (which makes sense since it's a solo album), and the biggest problem I have with that is that I don't like Zappa's playing.

He's undeniable one of the pioneers of the Avant-Garde movement, but none of his music surprises me or makes me feel any special emotion, I just think he's great, and that's it.

The Grand Wazoo, unlike his early records, really wasn't a milestone of Avant-Garde in the sense that it didn't revolutionize the genre in some way. It's just Zappa and his eccentric playing. The dissonance, atonality, jazz and quirkiness of his playing is always present and this is something you either love or dislike. The album itself is, as expected, very experimental and at some points brilliant speaking about Zappa's technique, but I fail to find an idea or melody that leaves my mind blank.

An album for Frank Zappa fans for sure. But I can't say in any way this is an essential record to the genre, like the album Hot Rats was. It's three stars for me, but if you are a Zappa fan you must check it out.
