4 stars Upon listening to PENDRAGON's 2008 album "Pure," I can see and it is definitely evident that the band has created a piece of work that exquisitely showcases their classical rock influences. With a combination of progressive rock and hard rock elements, this album provides a unique listening experience that is both stimulating and enjoyable.

One of the positives of this album is the impressive musicianship exhibited throughout each track. Nick Barrett's guitar work is a standout, and his solos are executed with virtuosity and precision. Complementing this is Clive Nolan's keyboard playing, which adds depth and texture to the songs. Furthermore, Peter Gee's bass and Joe Crabtree's drums provide a solid foundation for the music.

The album's production values are also notable, with a clean and crisp sound that enhances the listening experience. The mixing is balanced and allows each instrument to stand out and shine, without becoming muddy or overpowering.

In terms of songwriting, "Pure" showcases a diverse range of styles and moods. From the uplifting and anthemic opener "Indigo," to the raucous and powerful "This Green and Pleasant Land," and the melancholic and introspective "Breaking the Spell," there is something for everyone. However, at times the tracks can feel overly long, with some sections that drag on for too long.

Another potential downside of this album is the lack of innovation or experimentation. While the musicianship and songwriting are top-notch, there are few moments that truly stand out as unique or groundbreaking. This may make "Pure" less appealing to listeners who are seeking a more progressive or avant-garde sound.

Overall, PENDRAGON's "Pure" is a solid offering that will please fans of classic and hard rock, as well as those looking for a well-crafted and polished album. While it may not break new ground or take risks, it is a well-executed piece of work that showcases the band's strengths and musicianship.
