3 stars Water. Spirit. Transmutation.

Water- one of those substances that is so ubiquitous, so necessary, so omnipresent that it's treacherously easy to take it for granted.

In this, his all-instrumental debut release talented Italian multi-instrumentalist Antonio Maffei, AKA UNCONSCIOUS MOTIFS, serves up a thirst-inducing, thirst-quenching ocean of conceptual post-rock-influenced progressive metal.

The concept? The Water Spirit begins a musical journey of transformation. Water takes many forms- in this EP, rainfall, dancing river meets surging sea into oceanic depths, and transmuting into human form.

Only to die, and as human corpse is carried by Octopus to the surface and gently laid to rest on the sands of the oceanic beach.

Spirit

We find, if we allow ourselves to dream and to meditate, that the music, ranging from gentle acoustic guitar patterns to full-on crunchy complex power riffs, from dreamy synths and keyboard sounds to discordant guitar chords to melodic lead over clean picked guitar patterns, draws us to consider the MEANING of water.

The SYMBOLISM of Octopus. The 'deep dive' into self, into emotion, into search for essence, foundation, for Spirit.

Water- cleansing, forming and shifting and changing. Spirit- meaning, purpose, sensation, coherence in the midst of chaos and change.

Transmutation

How DOES life evolve? The gentlest water surging and flowing wears deep traces in hard rock formations and leaves long-lasting impressions.

Fall belly first on the smoothest water and find yourself bruised and perhaps fatally wounded. Then you too are changed, cleansed, bathed, transformed.

The Octopus itself is a symbol of change, as it seems to transmute- shifting colors based on its surroundings, creativity, intelligence, living even when limbs are removed.

Water. Spirit. Transmutation- Antonio Maffei- as UNCONSCIOUS MOTIFS- pours himself into this EP, showing a range of musical incarnations, depicting in deep waves the mysterious, life-giving, life-taking power of the ubiquity of water.

My rating- 3.5 liquid forms.
