4 stars Now, to be honest i was really expecting something big with this album and indeed this band, and did they deliver? Wel in my opinion yes and no.

The songwriting on this album is great its got everything prog fans could want, long songs, extended solos, some very cool almost Yes like keyboards and fantastic musicmanship, this just seems to be a band that is really trying a bit too hard when they dont really need to put in half the effort, song like the 17 minute instrumental OUROBOROS i felt could have been cut a little, it did feel like it dragged on just for the sake of it and not for songwriting reasons, the other thing i didnt like was the production, i was maybe expecting them to even put a slightly modern spin on the production side of things, instead it just sounded a bit muddy to me and i couldnt tune in to any of the other instruments too well apart from the guitars, i just like to hear a decent mix of everything is all.

Now the songs range from blusey folk (SILENT SLEEP), BROKEN GLASS sounded like it could have came stright from Camel's Moonmadness, and the epic title track THE WEIRDING is just fantastic and very catchy, so overall, this wasnt a bad album, dispite some flaws;

The Rising of the Black Sun - 7/10 The Weirding - 10/10 Silent Sleep 9/10 The River Under - 7/10 Ouroboros - 7/10 Broken Glass - 8/10 The Dawning of Ophiuchus - 7/10 Beyond to Slight the Maze - 7/10

My Conclusion? Despite the flaws i just mentioned (i would consider them minor since i did enjoy the album overall) i would reccomend this album, again a good prog album, worth the listen.
