4 stars Surprisingly no reviews here for this arguably best and most fusion-driven effort alongside "Faces in reflection", as there are no unashamed commercial intentions yet. Even though there are melodic and lighter pieces, the instrumentation is often fierce. It's like a candy with an exploding inner taste. Listen for example to the poetically titled "Love" with very creative and intensive beats, great Zappa guitar and perfect background electric piano. This song also showcases surprisingly suitable voice for funk and R&B by Duke. He used the voice also during the tenure in the Zappa band. The amazing rhythmical drumming abilities by Chancler need to be highlighted, you may say it sometimes goes over the top but he has so much fun alternating beats. Duke has developed a great taste in various keyboard instruments, be it acoustic piano, Fender Rhodes, electric piano or synth bass a la more intensive Stevie Wonder. Two outstanding 5-star fusion numbers include "Old slippers" and partly "Rashid" when things get hotter. Fusion by Duke actually also has a melody and development so it's not just an exercise in the instrumental orgy. "Theme from the opera Tzina" features a mellow synth texture led short track, also worth exploring. The album worth exploring to any fusion fan.
