5 stars Bran were a beautiful mix of many genres and can't really be called 'prog' exclusively. One could argue that they aren't prog at all, but they are definitely a unique and wonderful band. Their short history was marred by line-up changes but the three albums they left us are all intriguing in their own way. Their debut album 'Ail-Ddechra' is a wonderful work. On this album you can hear the first stirrings of operatic rock and metal, predating the likes of Nightwish and Within Temptation by many years, and in Nest Howells they possessed a singer with an unearthly voice that truly comes once in a lifetime. Her operatic phrasings are a joy to behold. The album covers all genres imaginable to the mid-70's music fan: folk, rock, metal, punk and even a little blues can be found on this unique record. Their record company allowed them complete freedom and it shows. 'Y Gwylwyr' is a well-known piece and is an eerie tale of the seas. The drum patterns are fascinating and Nest's vocal is heartfelt. 'Ynys Gudd' is an outrageous operatic metal romp (bordering on punk) that sees Nest creating and defining a genre in under three minutes of pure, reckless abandon. 'Caledfwlch' was the winning song of 1975's 'Can i Gymru' contest and is included here in its beautiful, gentle folk form. Every song is a highlight in its own right and the eclectic mix is something to admire and appreciate. 1976's follow-up 'Hedfan' sported a more cohesive approach and often had prog elements but 'Ail Ddechra' is a wonderful album in its own right and shouldn't be overlooked. It mightn't be prog but it is something very beautiful, and that it was ever conceived of at all is a blessing to all who hear it for what it is: an innocent, moving and passionate record made by musicians that grasped their opportunity with joy and expressed (over twelve compositions) their hearts and souls with beautiful abandon.
