5 stars Review #84!

At first I could not stand King Crimson's 'Larks' Tongues in Aspic' at first listen, but all it needed was two for me to love it. Part one of the title track is full of surprises. Funky bass, mind-boggling percussion, and insane time signature changes are just a few of the elements that stand out. The second song is 'Book of Saturday', the first song I ever liked on this album. Some nice violin and weird reverse guitar or something like that. I have no idea. Confusing, but the track's good as hell. Next is 'Exiles'. This song pulls you in immediately with its weird intro. It then turns into this beautiful semi-acoustic song about coming to terms with forever being away from what you love. Easily one of the best King Crimson tracks ever. And then, one side two, is 'Easy Money', which is like a progressive blues-rock song. Begins and ends with weird scatting. I keep hearing Can's 'Moonshake' in the random background noises. If you have no idea what that is, I implore you to listen to 'Easy Money' and 'Moonshake' back-to-back. It won't take up too much of your time. The next track is 'The Talking Drum', which only starts talking about a minute into the song. It begins with a long ambient intro, then morphs into a nice percussion/bass-driven beat. Then the violin enters the scene, and everything gets jammin'. I honestly have no idea why this song is called 'The Talking Drum' and why it is in the album at all (I'm not complaining, it's my favorite of the six). For some reason, about two-thirds of the way through, the music gets louder. Hey, it's King Crimson. It is not my business to ask. The second part of the title track (which ends the album) begins a billion times stronger than the first part. The bass in this song is incredible. Relatively simple, but delicious. More of King Crimson's best. A great way to close the album. And if your first reaction to this album was like mine, give it another spin. You'll surprise yourself, I assure you.
