5 stars This album is insane! It really doesn't get a lot more cool than this one. Gone are the pastoral sounds of the previous Genesis albums. Our Puerto Rican hero Rael travels to a mythological underworld dimension to rescue his brother from monsters and mayhem.

The title track is the first time I ever heard classic Genesis as it made it's way into Classic Rock radio in the early nineties as a deep track. Probably the first time I really heard Peter Gabriel had been in Genesis. Anyway the piano intro is about as distinct and memorable as they come.

Fly on the Windshield seems to have some eastern influence. Reminding me a bit of Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" or Mahavishnu Orchestra of something. Really cool sounding track.

Cucko Cocoon, In the Cage, and The Grand Parade of Lifeless Packaging are off the wall, bizarre, and as weird as it gets but beyond cool at the same time. Craziness I really enjoy. I have no idea what these songs are talking about but man do they sound good.

Back in NYC is Punk/Prog before their was Magazine and even before Punk really hit anywhere. Maybe Roxy Music influenced this or maybe they had a Time Machine.

Carpet Crawlers an easy listening track despite the weirdness of the lyrics. The keyboards sound magical on this track.

The Chamber of 32 Doors gives us so many options. Which door do I enter and what are the consequences?

The Lamia a beautiful sounding song about almost being devoured by a snake woman.

The Colony of Slippermen and Riding the Scree are a couple of the coolest songs in Prog Rock. Some Jazz Fusion, Funk, and World Music possibly thrown in. Some really bizarre and cool sounds. My 2 favorite tracks on the album.

Oh wow the tragedy this is the final album for Peter Gabriel before his departure. Pink Floyd had just astonished millions with the release of Dark Side of the Moon. This album is the perfect answer for topping the awesomeness of that album. But it all came to an end to quickly.

Classic Genesis is the cream of the crop for 70's Prog. I remember listening and even buying their 3 albums before this one. Wasn't expecting at all to get anything like I heard from this album. A complete departure but it resulted in a masterpiece!
