3 stars I guess Freak Out deserves all the praising for historical reasons only (first double lp, first record by fz, etc.), not that much music wise. Only in embryo have we got a glimpse of what the mothers would be in years to come, in tracks like "hungry frealks daddy", or "who are the brain police", and the final "return of the son of monster magnet". the other tracks are neat and, although shocking at the time, I don't think they may be now. I'm not saying it's not a good album; simply, zappa and the mothers would do way better in the future.
