2 stars Hot Chips on the road

This 2 track single is the latest release from Kraftwerk at time of writing. It was not however recorded by the band in 2007, but takes two tracks from their 2003 "Tour de France soundtracks" album and offers them in remix form. The remixes were carried out by British electronic/dance band Hot Chip.

The results are 2 extended numbers which are heavy on the rhythms but deficient in strength of melody. The title track certainly offers a variety of sounds and, although repetitive, the music does move from one theme to another. With a little imagination, it is pretty easy to associate the music with a long distance cycle race. The pulsating beat could be used by any cyclist as a metronome for their pace.

If the 8½ minutes of the title track are not enough, "La forme" is extended to some 11½ minutes. The mix here is described as the "King of the mountains mix", the music once again capturing the intense rhythmic monotony of long distance high speed cycling. Once again, there is a commendable variety in the themes and pace, which largely retain the interest throughout.

It seems those waiting for any genuinely new product from Kraftwerk will have to wait a bit longer. This interim single is as much about the remixers as it is about the band themselves. An enjoyable listen if you like trance/dance/electronic, but otherwise not one for the prog community.
