4 stars Review #156!

'Freak Show' is one of The Residents' most haunting albums. Here, synths are utilized to the fullest, making for an intentionally claustrophobic and eerie record. The concept here is quite prominent: a touring Freak Show explores the minds and bodies of all its freaks. This concept is an allegory for The Residents' actual tours: their vantage point of the audience and the atmosphere of their shows. And by God, that concept is HEAVY in terms of representation through the instrumentation on this album. But it's not just the concept that is great. The songs are great too! Songs like 'Everyone Comes To The Freak Show', 'Harry The Head', and 'Lillie'. Since I foresee myself spending way too much time talking about all the individual songs, I'll focus on my personal favorite: 'Lillie'. It calls back to their earlier records, like 'Duck Stab' and 'Not Available', especially the latter. Highly emotional, rapidly changing in mood and melody, and of course, very synth-driven. And if that sounds good to you, check this album out! It's worth every cent! (There might be a few pennies wasted, depending on if you get the 2006 re-release or not.) Prog on!
