4 stars What can I say about this masterpiece. My ancestors are Norwegian so the connect with Terje Rypdal is immediate and deep, Also with Erik Wollo, who's solo albums also take you on a journey far away. Meanwhile Rypdal has been creating melodies for decades by himself and with his groups usually consisting of Rainer Bruninghaus, Palle Mikkelborg, Jon Christiansen , Jack DeJohnette, Miroslav Vitous, to name but a few storied musicians.

His recordings are many But this 1976 album : After the Rain stands out because it is a quiet retrospective journey that keeps you coming back. Melancholy, Moody, Somber, Reflective all apply here. When i first heard the album I was sitting on the deck of my small cabin watching the silent sunset glow swept across the mountains as a cool breeze blew thru the mountain meadow in front of me. Its a moment I will never forget because the world fell away as Terje Rypdal's music echoed across the hills and me with a tear on my cheek. The last song of this album Like a Child, Like a Song was that moment .

Other tracks include several acoustic guitar only movements. Others with more instruments such as the Acoustic piano, Flute, subtle Sax, Rhodes Elect Piano and various synth String synth kybrds . Some wordless vocals by his wife Inger, and his ever present searing yearning Electric guitar.

His other notable albums are Terje Rypdal, Jack DeJohnette and Miroslav Vitous their eponymous first album and later 'To Be Continued'. Descendre , Blue, the list goes on. Many of his groups go beyond frontiers and can get really 'out there' So if you like that trip then you wont be disappointed. But if you are more the mellow listener there are several albums like 'After the Rain' that will embrace you and tug your heart. Exploring 'new' music should be every listeners goal and Terje Rypdal certainly fills that quest full on.
