4 stars Another great Roxy record. Opens with the funky plunky "Love is the Drug"... My favorite evolution of B ferry is probably this album, somewhere between a baratone David Byrne from the Talking Heads days, and Morrissey. Lots of musical instuments, variations, and always with the great bass playing evident in early Roxy Music. "End of the Line" follows with a blue grass sort of sound. Then comes "Sentimental Fool" which starts with some slow, distorted gutar and plinky piano, then on to a 5 minute sax-bass dominated, blusey song with Ferry poping in and out of falsetto. Maybe the slow point on the album, but still a good song. It's takes off again with "Whirlwind" another funky tune, with some "Cars" sounding syth work. "How far is shangrila from here, and is it this way?" a cute quote from Whirlwind. Ferry doing his low David Byrne with the slight vibratto. "She Sells" has a contemporary (70's) pop piano line with quick fiddly violin and synth background as it moves into a dance beat. ("Now your flying to fix me, auto-erotic please"). "Could it happen to me" is a cool 70's piano pop sounding tune that keeps changing eveytime you start to tire of it. "Both Ends Burning" is a mid-tempo track, reminds of Bowie at his best with great sax work along with spacy synth. I realize that my comparisons are all post- roxy, I'm assuming the reader hasn't heard this yet and I'm comparing to some more contemporary or well known music. last two songs are great too. Good lyrics, style to spare, Roxy is really good music.
