5 stars Got maudlin, really

Before I start there is one thing which needs to be said: this is not a metal album. Maudlin of the Well tempered their inclination to death metal which wasn't neither bad nor positive factor in their music. PART THE SECOND is avant-garde/atmospheric rock album, however more accessible and melodic than Kayo Dot.

I was astonished by an impact this record had on me at first time I listened to it. At first I knew I must listen to it again, I didn't know why. Second, third, fourth listen and I was in love. This is certainly very special musical work, or should I say, musical masterpiece which may require patience from impatient listeners to fully appreciate it. It's worth the effort, I assure you.

I listened casually to previous albums from Maudlin of the Well and I have to admit that they are different, heavier and generally don't appeal to me. I can appreciate extreme music and uncompromising sound so the heaviness of BATH or LEAVING YOUR BODY MAP didn't discouraged me. It's lack of consistency in term of composition - the music seems to be too contradictory and clumsy. On the contrary, PART THE SECOND is sophisticated and consistent work, but most of all it is genuinely beautiful and original. Every sound is there on purpose gradually making up unparalleled otherworldly atmosphere. I think that psychedelic Toby's voice and beautiful violin's passages performed by Mia Matsumiya determines its masterpiece status.

I could say that fans of otherworldly atmosphere, experiments, post metal, Tool, avant-classical music might be interested in this album. I could, but I think it is so genuinely beautiful that it can bewitch everyone with imagination and sensibility to music. This record has been created with true genius participation. Absolutely unique.
