5 stars Sheer brilliance. With this collection, WR emerged as an utterly unique ensemble whose vision encompassed jazz, rock, funk, and folk music from around the world without settling even for a moment into any predefined category. The two standout tracks - the title cut, "Nubian Sundance," and "Cucumber Slumber" - are propulsive, probing, funky celebrations of musical freedom, but that's just the beginning. "Jungle Book" sings like a folk tune from an imaginary country, "Scarlet Woman" spins a web of mystery and intrigue, the piano/sax duet "Blackthorn Rose" flutters between Zawinul's tender whispers to Shorter's squeals of delight. An extraordinary record.
