3 stars Is It Art or a Joke? - this is the real question concerning this album, and is one that I don't really know the answer to. This album isn't fantastic, but it is better than a lot of the previous albums. The download page for this album had this written:

"All tracks have the same notes, patterns, speed and effects. Only there are other VSTi synths used to create different sounds. Total production time was 6 hours."

So, that makes this album a "variations on a theme"-type project. I have to say, the speed and the effects are satisfying, and bring this album high above much of the uneventful ambience of the more boring albums in Phrozenlight's discography. The sounds and effects on this album are cosmic chirping and solar winds. The background droning effect for each track is different, sometimes being either windy or airy, or sometimes a computational-sounding drone, and sometimes even what you'd expect a black-hole to sound like while it sucks in all other sound and light around it. But, again, these soundscapes are still kind of sparse on the emotional or engaging elements, making this simply an average atmospheric album with a few interesting effects. Like the albums before this one, there really isn't much progression in these tracks. Of course, as indicated by the title and the subject matter of this release, Is It Art Or A Joke? is an experimental album. Any experimental album by any artist may not sound fantastic, but it is always a good occurrence. The fact that Phrozenlight is willing to display his experimental projects shows a sign of an artist willing to experiment and make changes that may ultimately turn to improve his sound.

Not a fantastic release, but hopefully a sign of great things to come.
