8 ? Best Song: Spread Your Wings

Ouch, what a significant drop in overall quality. Talk about selling out to the lowest common denominator and being thoroughly punished for it. This was, what I deeply consider to be Queen's big sell-out record. It has 'We Will Rock You' and 'We are the Champions' on it. It doesn't matter if the next eight songs following were some of the grandest, most brilliant statements in heartfelt music that would put Lennon's solo career to shame, this record would still have some major issues to contend with before I started praising it. Evidently the band weren't making enough money, so they shove both feet deep into arena rock mush.

The two opening singles are offensively poor excuses for songs. Freddie sings like he's in Bad Company, which is very much an insult. It's also kind of fitting for how the poor future of the band would become. What else is notable about News of the World? Well the recording values are atrocious. 'Sheer Heart Attack' is a banal punk rock shit. The only saving grace I can find on the damn album is 'Spread Your Wings', which is the only convincing thing a foolheaded fop like Mercury ever crooned. In fact, I actually love that song. I'm surprised they stuck it here, and didn't save it for a more appropriate collection. Oh well, this is a surprising drop in quality. What are ya going to do? Ignore this record? I might.
