4 stars Released in the early 70's but recorded in 1968 before the "Trout Mask" sessions, this is extraordinary featuring one of the Captain's best MAGIC BAND line-ups stretching out on 4 extended numbers. "Kandy Korn" is my favorite, a simply outstanding track that sounds about a decade ahead of it's time. "Post-rock" indeed! I love the way the alternately hypnotic and quasi-funky riffage subtly builds in intensity til the concluding tympani-style drums rolls and explosion of feedback.

The other tracks are more blues-oriented, though with the free-jazz leanings of "Trout Mask" starting to appear (the Cap'n sticks to harmonica instead of sax however.) Maybe not a record for "progheads" as much as fans of the psychedelic and krautrock styles . . . . Definitely essential for Beefheart fans.
