There is absolutely no way that Grendel
is better than Suppers Ready. Grendel is, at best, an amaturish work that the Marillion
themselves are somewhat embarressed about now. Supper's Ready is the epic that
defined prog epics for all time. Quite simply, the playing, songwriting, and performance on
Supper's Ready is so far beyond Grendel that it is not worth even discussing (the drumming
on Grendel is quite bad as well, where the drumming on Supper's Ready is quite excellent).
And I actually kind of like Grendel. But there is simply no comparsion. And if you are
thinking that it is not a clone, Marillion themselves admit that it was in fact their attempt to
emulate Supper's Ready. As to the other two songs that were on this EP, they are both good in their own way, though I prefer 3 Boats as it is a much more interesting track. Standing on it's own
merits, I give the EP 3 1/2 stars.
