3 stars Listening diary 2nd February 2021: Deep Purple - Made in Japan (hard rock/heavy metal, 1972)

I'm fairly close to reaching the consensus opinion that this is Deep Purple's real classic, but for one major obstacle - "Child In Time", their best song, just isn't as good as the studio version here. It comes down mostly to Lord ruining the iconic intro a bit, which is odd because pretty much every part he plays on the other songs here are an improvement. This, as a release though, is the epitome of what I really want concerts to be - totally different, totally live versions of songs. In an age of bands playing to clicks in their in-ears, it's so nice to hear a group of musicians playing off each other and ultimately just having fun with songs. If you want to hear the studio version replicated, just listen to it at home.

But ultimately, as much as this is a great album on paper, there's a lot of fluff here that I don't care for - not least because I've never really rated half the songs here. It opens powerfully but by the end of the record you're aching for the song to be over and the jams to begin - fortunately they give you a fair bit of that.
