5 stars Their first soundtrack may seem like a lightweight soundtrack at first, but it's actually a very serious and heavy album, containing many of Pink Floyd's best early songs, including the super-mellow and melancholy "Cirrus Minor", the beautiful and plaintive "Green Is the Colour", "The Nile Song", decidedly their heaviest rocker, and "Cymbaline" pointed the way towards the writing and playing style they would later perfect on Dark Side of the Moon. There are also some great psychedelic gems here like the groovy "Main Theme", the very avant- garde Wright-heavy "Quicksilver" (complete with piano string glissandos drenched in reverb), and the closing "Dramatic Theme", where Gilmour takes his guitar sound to new heights, and very much finding his sound in the solo at the end. You can also hear Wright and Mason playing considerably faster and jazzier than usual on the track, "Up the Khyber." There may be a few relatively weak moments, but they are very brief, and the strongest tracks are actually above the standard they'd been recording at around the time, making More an essential psychedelic rock album. Enjoy on vinyl with something green.
