4 stars This stunning Hungarian band was (or is?) the living proof that progressive rock still can be progressive instead of regressive, what an innovative and adventurous sound! This is a 2-CD (from 1996) that contains a selection of songs from their first four studio albums and re-mixed, previously unreleased and live tracks. After Crying started as a classical ensemble, you can hear that on their debut CD Overground Music ('90) featuring lots of brass (fagot, oboe and trombone) - and strings (cello, violin) along beautiful, very warm Hungarian vocals. The pianoplay is outstanding, from sparkling like Chopin to furious like Rachmaniov, fans of Wakeman and Emerson will be delighted! On the following albums Megalazzotak ('92), Fold Es Eg ('94) and my favorite De Profundis ('96) After Crying gradually blended their classical inspired music with modern instruments like keyboards, electric guitar and - bass and drums. On De Profundis their sound evokes Red-era King Crimson delivering fiery electric guitar, propulsive drums and powerful brass work. The blend of classical instruments and progrock also brings The Snow Goose from Camel, Gryphon and even Atom Heart Mother from Pink Floyd on my mind. But don't get me wrong, After Crying sounds as After Crying, despite the aforementioned influences. My highlights are the songs Söteben and A Novelty (classical climate with Fripperian guitar play) and the ominous and bombastic Judas. The final track on CD-2 is a great rendition of King Crimson their composition 21st Century Schizoid Man. CHECK OUT THIS BAND!!
