4 stars "Synchestra" was the first Devin Townsend album I ever heard. I didn't expect to enjoy it, but I did. Frankly, it blew me away. I like to think of it as one long piece of music because it all flows together. Devin is quite original and may be a genius when it comes to music. The disc opens with a catchy acoustic song and the album encompasses metal, folk, rock, prog rock and something's that are honestly unique to Devin. This is an album unlike anything I've ever heard, and it is hard to define such a sound. There is a "wall of sound" effect here, where there is so much going on that it meshes together into a vast being that overpowers you. It is so complex and so multi-tracked that it's hard to hear specific parts. This is a good thing though because it means you get a fuller and richer experience that reveals more and more with each subsequent listening. Devin is a great vocalist and guitarist also. His uses a lot of vocal trickery and harmony, and it is very heartfelt and sounds amazing. Overall I'd say this is just a truly unique album and you must hear it to understand why. Devin Townsend is a unique artist that does not conform to trends or sell out. He does what he wants and luckily it is fantastic. "Synchestra" is a great reminder that there are still people with a vision and a drive to make something all their own. It is highly recommended.
