5 stars This album is by far one of Symphony X's best, and can be placed equally alongside the incredible 'Divine Wings of Tragedy', simply because it's different. This album signalled a slight change in direction for the band, and is by far their heaviest album, with incredile, brutal riffs, without sacrificing the progressive elements found on earlier releases. The musicianship as always is breathtaking, right from the opening onslaught by the aptly named 'Inferno'. Rullo's drumming is faster and heavier than ever, and Lepond's bass excellent. Russel Allen continues to show why is one of Metal's premier vocalists, adding yet a more agressive edge to his voice, while still maintaining strong and passionate vocals such as on 'Accolade II'. This is also the first song on the album in which the symphonic, progressive elements of the album begin to take shape, brilliantly performed by Michael Pinnella. All songs on this album are excellent, but the stand outs include: 'Inferno', 'Accolade II', 'King of Terrors', 'Awakenings', and the breathtakingly, awe-inspiring, 24 minute title-track- 'The Odyssey'. A must for all Symphony X fans, and for fans of the heavier side of Progressive-Metal.
