4 stars One of Ulver's finest lesser known efforts.

It is strange how few have heard this, in what I think is one of Ulver's better releases, though clearly not up to par with Perdition City or Blood Inside. Perhaps the most noticeable aspect of this album is the absence of Garm's vocals. Also noticeable is the distinct lack of "sharpness" that can be heard and felt on many of Ulver's finer moments. However, despite what might be considered as two pitfalls, the release is quite good, with moody passages and a knack for having "programmed feeling" that would seem to be near impossible to create effectively.

None of the tracks really stick out from one another, as its lineup might suggest. If you are able to enjoy one or two of them, it is more than likely that you would enjoy the whole album. This was originally written for a small film, and I am quite surprised at how it might have fit into cinema, not having seen the film myself. What makes this more unique is the lack of "progressiveness" that would be deemed common on this site. Their are no soaring melodies, no tight interplay between instruments, no mind boggling virtuoso technique. Their is, however, a distinct aura created, one that few could create and master, and that artistry alone speaks for itself.

Ulver continues to show excellence, often in unconventional manners, but nevertheless captivating and eye-opening. For those with liberal views on music, Lyckantropen Themes will be another fine collection to your library.

4 stars With albums such as Perdition City and Teachings In Silence already reminiscent of an ice cool post-rock interpretation of the Blade Runner soundtrack, it was only a matter of time before Ulver moved on from recording soundtracks to imaginary films to soundtracks to real ones. Lyckantropen Themes is the brief soundtrack to a film 8 minutes shorter than this album is, and sees Ulver once again bringing forth a melancholy, spooky, almost noirish electronic sound. Lacking any abrasive audio samples or dialogue snippets - in keeping with its role as background music for a film - this is one of the better fully-instrumental albums of Ulver's non- metal career.
