WINGS OF VISION / SUNSET

This is a 7'' inch vinyl which was released to promote their extended german tour in 1980. ELOY's label wanted to advance the idea to produce a radio friendly song especially for this occasion and the band agreed after being sceptical first.

But Wings Of Vision is polished, worthless, sounding like a soft ballad and doesn't really represent ELOY's musical skills. And so this track didn't get the anticipated attention afterwards. Sunset is the last song taken from the album 'Colours' which was released the same year with acoustic guitar and nice synth additions - an atmospheric one which works better.

By musical standards nothing to get excited about - but for collectors a very rare gem anyhow.

A single release from Eloy put out in 1980. This contains "Wings of Vison" and "Sunset". Nothing too groundbreaking or really proggy is here but it's pretty good music in a kind of Alan Parsons Project way. Collectors of the this band might want this but no one else needs it. Stick to the older 70's albums and releases, is my motto. Hard to see why this was released. It''s not even a very good single and probably did not help album sales much. The 80's were not Eloy's decade at all, like many great prog bands of the 70's trying to find their way

This 1980 single is a bit different from what you expect out of Eloy. "Wings of Vision" is an obvious attempt at sounding just like Duke-era Genesis, which happen to come out roughly the same time. It's really funny to hear Frank Bornemann attempt to sing like Phil Collins, but in the end still sound like Frank Bornemann. Even Hannes Folberth attempts some Tony Banks-type keyboards, but from his synths, but then there's a spacy break that's undeniably Eloy. I was really tripping out that Eloy would go Genesis on us like that. You can tell Jim McGillivray's style is his own, he doesn't attempt to imitate Phil Collins' drumming. As for the B-Side, "Sunset", it's a short instrumental synth-piece, already found on Colours, so if you have Colours, no surprises here as it's directly taken from the album.

I can see not everyone will like "Wings of Vision", but I do, but just think of it a Duke-era Genesis song done by Eloy, and you'll be fine.
