4 stars The 'Genesis Songbook' is an interesting 2001 documentary covering the story of Genesis from the first record up to 'Calling All Stations' with interviews by nearly all musicians that have played with the band (including Anthony Phillips and Jonathan Silver)+ manager Tony Smith, producers David Hentschel & Hugh Padham, writer & photographer (and friend of the band) Armando Gallo plus others, concert exerpts and video clips, plus some musical demonstrations among them some nice fretworking by Steve Hackett and Michael Rutherford. The main feature lasts about an hour and mixes interviews and visual elements in an intelligent and entertaining way. The interview parts are short but significant and the documentary gives an excellent overview of the band history. The 40 minutes of bonus deal with specific topics of the Genesis history all very interesting with a personal favour for Tony Banks comments about the writing of 'Supper's Ready' and Peter's comments about 'The Lamb'. The sound and picture quality is excellent and even the early documents look and sound slightly better the on some cheap DVD's. A must for newbies and fans!
