Spinifex biography
Spinifex are a Dutch avant-prog and jazz band from Amsterdam that was founded in 2005 by Tobias Klein and currently consists of Klein (alto saxophone), Jasper Stadhouders (guitar), Gonçalo Almeida (bass), Philipp Moser (drums), Bart Maris (trumpet, since 2015) and John Dikeman (tenor saxophone, since 2017). The group initially experimented with several larger and oft-changing line-ups and different instrumental make-ups (including a self-declared orchestra, a Carnatic crossover band and a tuba band), but by the time they released its debut album under their current name in 2013 they had settled on a quintet line-up (later increased to a sextet with the addition of a second saxophonist). The band's namesake, a tough and compact grass species from Australia, is indicative of its musical style, which is characterized by energetic and highly complex compositions with interlocking, multi-rhythmic melodic lines interspersed with moments of free-form improvisation.
