BEATEN BY THEM is a multi-national quintet currently consisting of guitarist Andrew Harris, guitarist and keyboardist Max McCormick, cellist Boima Tucker, bassist Spencer Murray and drummer Jeff Ardziejewski. The group is based in San Francisco, Melbourne and New York, has released two albums and one EP, and has set their creative ambitions to write and perform rock music that transcends stylistical barriers.

The music of BEATEN BY THEM is a very interesting and original mix of classic post-rock and more experimental ideas, similar in many ways to the early 90s post-rock bands. The typical rough guitar tone and edginess of GY!BE don't come with the slow build-up & climax type of songwriting, but with a more aggressive approach based on instrumental interplay, noisy or crazy avantgarde-ish moments reminding of early innovators such as BRISE-GLACE, JIM O'ROURKE or BOXHEAD ENSEMBLE, and also with a melodic, song-oriented side too. Sometimes repetitive riffs extended into epic psychedelic movements remind of the early krautrock inspired bands such as CUL DE SAC, PRAM and GANGER. On their second record, mallets and a certain playfulness remind of TORTOISE. A mandatory stylistic reference for BEATEN BY THEM would overall be KAMMERFLIMMER KOLLECTIEF and A SILVER MT. ZION.
