Niall Mathewson really needs no introduction to fans of the Neo Prog Genre, having been a mainstay of legendary Scottish band Pallas since the late 70s. The only surprise is that it has taken so long for him to release a solo album. And Eclectic Electric Vol 1, released in late 2015 truly is a solo album in all senses of the word.

Playing all the instruments on his debut record, Mathewson shows true dexterity on keys, bass and drums as well as one would expect on guitars. The only assistance he has is on vocals.

Mathewson?s characteristically atmospheric styling is to the fore, although away from the confines of the band environment he is able to explore different genres that would otherwise be off limits. There is a clear heavy rock/prog influence here, but also hints of softer rock and ambient textures.

For fans of Pallas this is an autobuy. For those who like their Neo prog or heavier rock, his work is well worth a listen.
