Atmospheric and intelligent debut.

One of the better debut albums that almost instantly defines the sound that Agalloch would become known for. We have fairly simplistic drums with an entanglement of acoustic and electric guitars that seems to flow effortlessly. The music can appear to "drone" on at times, but make no mistake there are also many dynamics here, with often unusual sounds found mixed together to give the album, and indeed most of Agalloch's work, a distinct feel, much like that of the Northwest, the band's home.

The beginning mini-epic essentially captures the spirit of a blustery day. The bells at 3 minutes into the 3rd section are exceptional and a wonderful example of the band's artistic style. This also marks as the best collection of songs on the album, although the rest is not bad, it's not up to par stylistically. The drumming is fairly monotonous and uninspiring, perhaps the worst aspect of the band.

I think it's important to note at this point that despite the importance of the acoustic/electric dualism in Agalloch's work, it is done distinctly different than Opeth, the band most often it is compared to. For lack of a better set of terms, Agalloch's transitions always have a "wintry" feel to them, and feel distinctly "wooden". One gets images of a western cabin with animals, a fireplace, and other such features.

Pale Folklore is an impressive debut. While not at the same status as The Mantle, it is a good album and should be looked into by those who can appreciate unique vocal styles. One of the better debut albums as well, as the band has already well defined its sound.
