3 stars "Baśnie" is the debut full-length studio album by Polish progressive rock act Collage. The album was released through Polish label Polton (which was bought by Warner Music Poland just a few years down the line) in 1990. Collage formed in 1985 and "Baśnie" is their first official release.

If it wasnīt already obvious from looking at the cover artwork, it doesnīt take more than a few seconds of opening track "Jeszcze jeden dzien" to hear that Collage are strongly influenced by the neo-progressive rock of Marillion and IQ. The lyrics are in the polish language and thatīs where Collage stand out the most, because the music is hardly original. 80s synths/keyboards and epic melodic guitar leads and themes dominate the music, along with a well playing rhythm section and a lead vocalist who can sing and delivers the vocals with the right melancholic tone.

But while the music isnīt that unique "Baśnie" is still an effectful, memorable, melodic, and at time quite beautiful neo-progressive rock release. For a non-Polish speaker the Polish lyrics take some getting used to, but I think most people these days are more used to hearing non-English language music (thanks Rammstein!...) than in the 70s/80s where you had to sing in English to succeed beyond your own country. At least in the US, UK, and Europe.

Collage not only write great music, "Baśnie" is also a very well produced release, and the band are skilled musicians too. So upon conclusion this is good quality debut release from Collage, and fans of the above mentioned neo-progressive artists should definitely give it a chance. A 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved.
