IN THE FLESH (DVD)

Taken from the June 27th, 2000 Portland, Oregon concert of the "In The Flesh" Tour by ROGER WATERS this live show has over 170 minutes of wonderful FLOYD and WATERS solo music. About 2/3 of the music is from the FLOYD era, and about 1/3 of the music from WATERS' various solo projects. Also included is 'Each Small Candle' a rarity solo piece only played on this tour, it's nothing special, but of note to collectors and afficianados.

As for the visual performance itself, WATERS voice at times shows his age, but the man generally appears to be having a good time. Though the entire band/ensemble consists of ten members, the focus is naturally, usually on WATERS, except for during various guitar or keyboards solos, when the camera focuses on the likes of SNOWY WHITE, DOYLE BRAMHALL or JON CARIN.The middle-aged crowd in attendance that evening are enjoying themselves, albeit ever so politely. Definitely no "Animals"-like teenaged enthusiasm here.

The highlight of the show is undoubtedly the full 17 minute performance of 'Dogs'. JON CARIN does a marvelous job singing not only GILMOUR's part of the song, but also playing the acoustic guitar parts and even pitching in some keyboard work (what CARIN is known for). In an 'hommage' to the famous painting of Dogs Playing Poker, ROGER WATERS and his other bandmates enjoy a few drinks and play a round of cards, while CARIN blasts his way through the middle instrumental part of the song.

A bonus 15 minute documentary included on the DVD entitled "Gearing Up" shows WATERS behind-the-scenes in a casual and (almost) human mood. But do not get any ideas, it's the same ol' Rog, still meticulous, and ever-controlling. The 'back-up' Bleeding Hearts Band still revere and bend to his every whim. This is after all, ROGER WATERS they are playing with...

All in all, a decent performance, but by no means visually stunning. (Unlike FLOYD's "The Division Bell" Tour documented in "P*U*L*S*E") For Floyd fans maybe this concert ranks a little higher, but for the average prog fan this warrants 3/5 stars. And there is no real need to own BOTH the DVD and the 2-CD version of this same concert. One or the other will do fine for the amount of times you'll listen/watch it.
