5 stars Lovely as the moon: not flawless, perhaps, but perfect.

Quite different from The Nocturnes' previous effort, which was essentially indie psych-folk, Aokigahara is a gorgeous wall-of-sound approach to folk music. The most accurate term I can think of to describe it is "post-folk," as it does indeed share many elements with post rock. The slightly muddy production is incredibly effective, in my opinion, and the tones are all wonderful. The songwriting is impeccable, the lyrics are effective, the instrumentation is subtly powerful, and the vocal harmonies are beautiful. This album has soothed me to sleep more times than I can count. I honestly can't even think of what else to say about Aokigahara, besides that it is the best release of 2011. Just listen to it.
