4 stars HYBRIS is archetypal prog rock. Every stereotype associated with prog rock is showcased here to full force - even bands like YES and KING CRIMSON are not this textbook prog.

Yet that by no means makes HYBRIS an essential album. The band's bibliography mentions that ANGLAGARD formed to make progressive rock music in the style of the 70s greats - and boy does that show. The result, unfortunately, is amazing music tainted by a feeling that this whole album is a back-patting musical exercise. It just seems like there's too much Mellotron (does that make me a heretic? :-] ), too many tempo and time signiture shifts, too many directions the music is going at one time. It is, quite frankly, too overwhelming for my ears.

All that being said, I do give this album a spin from time to time, although it is difficult to digest in one sitting. Recommended to anyone who needs a break from the classic symphonic prog albums but doesn't want to stray too far off stylistically.

3.5 stars, rounded up for instrumental and production sophistication.
