GOING FOR THE ONE

I've heard this album several times since I started listening to Progressive Rock (back in 2009) and I've tried really hard to appreciate it but the result is always the same: I got more and more disappointed; yes, Rick WAKEMAN came back, but that didn't give anything special to the album.

"Going for the one" starts with an awful country-styled guitar that would sound good maybe in a George HARRISON album but not in a YES album.

"Turn of the century" is a quiet acoustic song but not acoustic with great passages and beautiful arrangements: acoustic boring, it's a song that I can't wait for it to end; I feel a huge urgency to switch to the next song.

"Parallels" sounds interesting at the beginning, like if it's going to be a very nice song in the vein of "Relayer" but the music doesn't change at all in the almost seven minutes that it lasts and sounds as if we were at a church on Sunday.

A-side = total waste

"Wondrous stories" is actually an improvement: WAKEMAN's keyboard sounds really stingy and annoying, but other than that is a good song with nice vocal arrangements.

"Awaken" Finally, a great song! This song is the only reason why I'll give a two stars rate instead of one. Nice piano entrance, then some very harmonized vocals and later a well-played Hard Rock of bass, guitar, and drums; a middle part with a whole change of rhythm, more intense and violent that ends with sweet tiny bells, then more nice organ arrangements by WAKEMAN and then the Hard Rock starts again. The song ends with a very soft harmonic arrangement of keyboards and cymbals.

B-side = good, but not enough

If you don't know this album my recommendation will be, keep the last song and throw the rest to the garbage.
