3 stars 10th April, 2021: Oliver Kaah - Photosynthesis (avant-garde progressive metal, 2013)

It's a pity that Oliver Kaah has seemingly disappeared because this album promises a lot - even if it is a bit of a mess on its own. It's a really interesting combination of Maudlin of the Well-esque eclectic prog metal with black and doom metal sounds, and at a few moments it gels together to really work quite well. Perhaps the biggest comparison would be with fellow kitchen sink metal band Dreadnought, but this also contains some of the caveats I had with their early work. The bedroom nature and the ad-hoc arrangements do get seriously cluttered and I can't say it's a great album on the whole, but it's certainly an interesting one, and I would have liked to have heard a more refined take on this style.
