5 stars This is Rock and Roll. What would a spaceship sound like if it was driven by Rock and Roll? When it was starting engines it would sound like Lord of Light, that's what. It was always the wild, right out there imagination that went into the Hawkwind project that meant that you had to have imagination to get anything out of it. 'Course, you should have artificially assisted imagination if possible, but unaided would do. But it was a package if it was anything. If you didn't like the sleeve design, if you couldn't get the idea that we really were in Search of Space, then you might as well not have bothered turning up. This was a jam and a joke and inspiration all at the same time. The world was right royally f****d when this album went out. GIs were still crawling all over SE Asia, and our futures were hanging delicately in the balance between Soviet insanity and American stupidity. What else were we going to do? HeatWave. Time We Left This World Today. And if you looked at the world from the outside, from the point of view of the Watcher, you had to feel pretty disappointed. This was an album to get lost in. You could get drunk in the depth of music here. But please! It is not pre- anything (least of all punk). This is just what it was. Hawkwind was first and foremost about improv and dance. That's why there's so many sounds. Its trance music to escape from the banal nuclear fear of the disenfranchised early seventies. Time We Left.
