This CD was sent to record stores as an in-store play promotional album, to sell the "Thirty Years Of Maximim R&B" boxed set in 1994.

The album covers the course of The Who from their early days (as The High Numbers) up through the last album wirh Leith Moon, "Who Are You", with one live track, I'm A Man added on from the post-Moon years (thankfully they skipped the Moonless singles).

It's not really in chronological order, but it mostly flows that way. There are a number of hits, as you would expect, and these are interspersed with live tracks. As an introduction to the boxed set, it was great. As an introduction to The Who, it's not bad either, although conspicuously absent are songs from the two rock operas, "Tommy" (although there is a live rendition of Underture from Woodstock) and "Quadrophenia".
