PROG REVIEWER
3 stars After the cascades of pop-oriented - and metal-oriented prog on this site here is some folk-oriented prog to enjoy! In 1990 the Spanish label Nuevos Medios SA started to release the compilation CD's entitled Los Jovenes Flamencos (The Young Flamencos). These CD's featured known Spanish progressive folk bands like Pata Negra and Ketama and musicians like Carlos Benavent and Jorge Pardo from the Paco De Lucia Sextet. This band had extended the musical horizon from flamenco by adding electric instruments and elements from jazz. The other artists on these compilations presented music that ranged from pure flamenco (guitar and vocals) to a progressive blend of flamenco, blues, rock, jazz and even some progressive rock. The CD's Los Jovenes Flamencos were a huge success, from Volume I until Volume VII. Here is a special priced box set that contains the 7 CD's from the entire serie. The focus on these CD's is obvious on flamenco but lots of artists are experimenting in a very exciting way by blending the flamenco with folk (violin, acoustic guitar, mandoline, accordeon), blues and rock (electric guitars, drums, electric bass), jazz (acoustic bass, flute, drums) and progressive rock (electric guitar and keyboards). On the whole box set the ghost from the innovative flamenco guitarist Paco De Lucia is present, he was so pivotal for the young guitarists like the amazing talented Vicente Amigo who also plays on this box, like the master himself! If you are up to the fascinating world of the flamenco and the typical flamenco vocals (expressive, often with a wailing undertone) with lots of progressive elements, Los Jovenes Flamencos will delight you!
